Facts About Mexico Cities Puerto Penasco

Puerto Penasco is a city and a municipality in Mexican State of Sonora. Located on the small strip of land joining the Baja California Peninsula with the rest of Mexico, Puerto Penasco lies just about 100 km from the Arizona Border. Puerto Penasco, part of the Altar Desert, is one of the hottest and driest regions of the larger Sonora Desert. Spread over an area of 9770 square km, Puerto Penasco has a population of 44,800 people.

Puerto Penasco had no permanent settlements due to lack of water but after the construction of a rail line passing through Puerto Penasco, the place was developed into a major town. After the 1990s, Puerto Penasco has become a popular tourist destination and a weekend gateway for the visitors from Arizona and California. Puerto Penasco is also known by its English Name Rocky Point or Rocky Port and it has also been nicknamed as 'Arizona's Beach'. With its pristine beaches with crystal clear waters stretching for hundred miles to north and to south, Puerto Penasco has turned into a major tourism hub in the late 1990s.
