Facts About Mexico Isla Mujeres Mexico

Isla Mujeres is a municipality in the State of Quintana Roo in Mexico and it is located in the northeastern corner of the state. Isla Mujeres (Spanish word – meaning Women Island) municipality has a small island town at a short distance of Yucatan Peninsula in the Caribbean Sea. Spread over 7 square km, Isla Mujeres has a population of about 11,000 inhabitants. Major modes of transportation include taxis, golf carts and moped scooters.





In the popular local culture, Isla Mujeres is associated with the Mayan Goddess of Childbirth and Medicine. A small Mayan temple of the Goddess existed prior to 1988, which was damaged extensively by the Hurricane Gilbert. Starting from the late 1970s, Isla Mujeres has come on the radar of popular tourist destinations in Mexico. Isla Mujeres island is mostly popular for the day trippers and short period vacationers (weekend gateway), Regular ferry boat services operate at every half an hour between Isla Mujeres island the Cancun mainland. The island is also famous for its fresh seafood and Mayan dishes.
